Choose To Race In The Great Northwoods

Hungry Bear has a route to challenge all riders. Take on the challenge to ride the Hungry Bear 100, race the Snacking Bear 60, or start with the Climbing Cub; all routes give riders a taste of Northern Wisconsin gravel riding and the great communities that make up our Northwoods.

More Than Just A Race

The Spirit of the Hungry Bear is about community, not just our local community but our cycling community and the world together. There are hundreds of fun races and rides in the Midwest that challenge you with swag bags stuffed with goodies, age-group prizes, fierce competition, award ceremonies, podiums, and registration fees nearing $100 or more. The Hungry Bear is less of those things. While we have basic timing, the Hungry Bear is more of an event ride than a race. The top finishers earn bragging rights, a sense of accomplishment, some pie, and a handshake or hug. Ok, this year, we will have a plaque with each race winner, male and female. The Hungry Bear was started when many gravel races were DIY, free, and almost underground events. It retains that minimally organized, self-reliant spirit and feels more like a family reunion than a typical bike race. We have support, directions, and a lot of fun. More importantly, The Hungry Bear goes beyond just the community of the event but gives back to make our community of cycling and life better. So, yes, it's more than just a gravel race!

2024 Gravel Routes

Whether you have the hankering to ride the Hungry Bear 100, Snacking Bear 60, or the Climbing Cub, all routes will serve up a challenge and give you a taste of the fortified gravel we have in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. From smooth rolling forest roads to steep descents littered with bumpy baby heads to eroded logging tracks, the three routes are a smorgasbord of million-year-old table scraps left over from the last glacial period.

New Organization

In 2023, New Moon Ski and Bike formally took over the Hungry Bear 100 gravel event. After several meetings with Seeley Dave after this year’s event, it was determined that the staff and community around New Moon understood and shared the Hungry Bear ethos. The Hungry Bear was born in the days when gravel races were unsupported DIY events where you were lucky to get a paper cue sheet and find a tavern at the end. We are trying to hold onto that BYOB adventure vibe that comes with a little bit of trepidation.

Profits from this event will be divided among community-based organizations like the Cable Volunteer Fire Department, The Steve Tilford Foundation, Regional Hospice, LCO Schools Scholarship, and other local non-profits and worthy causes.
